Rexer: Picture Nothing

Good evening,

Abstraction in photography, as mentioned via Carey’s polaroid installation, can reduce a picture down
to simply its presence and entirety, raising questions about the purpose of a photograph and its
definition. “Isn’t photography valued because it offers images of the world that can be used for
various purposes?” (Rexer, 112). As photography evolved, it grew from pure documentation to
something that could be used to express ideas creatively. The process of chemistry however, can
be the very thing that is being shown; they can show the process of creating images in unusual
ways, or creating art objects that provide the experience of a photograph without necessarily
following the direct criteria. This type of photography doesn’t have straight meaning on its own,
and therefore requires a viewer to make meaning.

“Nothing is pictured except what is. Everything is given so that meaning can be made and the
viewer’s presence affirmed,” (121).
